Congo battles rising cholera cases amid insufficient response

A cholera outbreak in the Republic of Congo has led to 679 suspected cases and 62 deaths since July, with a high mortality rate of 9.4 per cent. The most affected areas include Mbamou Island, Talangaï, and Mossaka-Loukolela. The epidemic’s spread is considered a high risk, particularly in remote rural areas where limited access suggests cases are likely underestimated. While a response plan is in place and some funding has been mobilized, the overall response is currently deemed insufficient to meet the pressing needs for WASH, healthcare, and other essential services.

Senegal

Rift Valley fever kills seven in Senegal

The region of Saint-Louis, north of the country, has recorded 21 Rift Valley fever (FVR) cases, including seven deaths, prompting maximum alert by health, veterinary and administrative authorities. FVR is a viral disease transmitted to humans through infected animals or mosquito bites. Local authorities convened an emergency meeting to coordinate response measures, including large-scale spraying, reinforced case management and increased surveillance. Health experts urged preventive practices such as avoiding contact with sick animals, consuming pasteurised milk and using mosquito nets. Veterinary services are reinforcing awareness among herders and considering vaccination of livestock. Authorities called for strong community mobilisation to contain the outbreak ahead of the school reopening.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Over 4,400 households received aid in Rutshuru Territory

Between 22 and 24 September 2025, the DRC Red Cross, in partnership with UNICEF, distributed essential household item kits, water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, and dignity kits to an estimated 4,431 displaced households in the Bukombo area of Rutshuru Territory. The beneficiary households were displaced due to intensified clashes between armed groups in surrounding villages between 25 and 30 June 2025. Despite this assistance, significant humanitarian needs persist in the area. Critical gaps remain in the Food Security, Education, and WASH sectors. OCHA continues to mobilize humanitarian partners to address the remaining gaps.

Mali

Fuel shortage starting to disrupt economic activities and humanitarian activities

The regions of Bandiagara, Douentza and Mopti have been experiencing a severe disruption in fuel supply, affecting economic activities, humanitarian operations and day-to-day lives. Mopti stands as the most affected as of now on account that since 5 September, no tanker truck has been able to reach Mopti. Some fuel stations are dry, while others impose limit on the amount of fuel that can be purchased while price has increased significantly in some areas. The current shortage stems from recent attacks on fuel tankers. The shortage is starting to disrupt humanitarian activities, affecting the mobility of teams and operations.
