About The Seminar
Unwanted nonspecific biomolecular and microorganism attachment on surfaces poses significant challenges in various applications. Our seminar aims to tackle this issue through two main goals: providing a fundamental understanding of nonfouling mechanisms at the molecular level and developing biocompatible materials based on these molecular principles. Our research has demonstrated that zwitterionic materials and surfaces exhibit exceptional resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption and microorganism attachment in complex media.
Seminar Highlights:
Design Principles of Zwitterionic Materials: Understand the molecular mechanisms that make zwitterionic materials highly resistant to fouling.
Applications: Explore the diverse applications of zwitterionic materials, including:
Implants: Long-term biocompatibility with no capsule formation upon subcutaneous implantation in mice for one year.
Stem Cell Cultures: Controlled preservation, expansion, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) without differentiation.
Medical Devices: Artificial lungs that function without the need for anticoagulants in sheep.
Drug Delivery Carriers: No antibodies generated against zwitterionic polymers, ensuring safe and effective drug delivery.
Current Research and Future Directions:
We are conducting a fundamental study of material interactions with the immune system, developing immunomodulatory materials, and creating safe, organ-targeting delivery carriers. Our work aims to translate these biomaterials to applications in immunotherapy, vaccines, and regenerative medicine.
